Monteleone - The Godfather of Archtop-Making
Once the soundbox of an archtop guitar has been closed there is very little access to change anything in the construction of this guitar. The tone-bars are not accessible anymore and the shaping of top and back can only be altered from the outside.
John Monteleone - the Godfather of archtop-making reveals some of his secrets how he vastly influences the sound of an archtop guitar or mandolin after the soundbox has been closed. I found it exceptionally interesting to hear which factors besides the thickness of the top and back change the sound in which way. I am sure you can convert some of the knowledge to other types of guitars. Enjoy! Holger John Monteleone's Box of Tricks

His guitars have a real grace and beauty to them and I've only seen them in pictures.

I played one of his flat tops at Scott Chinery's house once. I compared it back to back with a pre-war Martin D45. I should be embarrassed to admit this, but I greatly preferred the Monteleone. It was amazing.

John lives nearby. I recently saw a mandolin a local player had commissioned. Stunning, as is everything John builds. I only wish I could afford something from him. I feel lucky just seeing and hearing them.
