X gets dusted by Y
What are we? A bunch of beer swillin Irishmen?
There's a YouTube video of Robben Ford playing with Miles Davis and Carlos Santana in 1984. I'm sure many might say Carlos "dusted" Robben once again. Not really, Robben is doing his best to fit in. Kind of like Steve Nash as point guard of the Phoenix Suns. Carlos was pretty good back in the day, before he became a walking parody of himself. |

I HATE and typically stay away from all the "X blew Y away" stuff!!!!!! One man's idea of chops is another man's idea of meat loaf!!!!
It is ALL about having fun and putting out the highest quality of music we can!!!!!!!!!!! My motto...............If it gets TOO cut throat and you are not having fun, PUT it away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I don't think I've ever seen one player flat-out "dust" another. What I HAVE seen, countless times, is players making an effort to complement each other and find a mutual level of communication. It was actually a frustrating experience, as a Paul Gilbert fan, to see him show what I felt was excessive self-restraint when he toured G3 with Satriani and Petrucci, and they all jammed at the end. I kept thinking, "C'mon Paul, let it GO!", but he wouldn't do it. He sure had fun, though.

Carlos lost me with that godawful "Love Devotion and Surrender" album where he played the role of John McLaughlin's ethnic buddy. He sounded like a high school student playing along with a Mahavishnu record. His early stuff was very good, though.
On the subject of steel cage matches between famous players, Jazz has always been competitive. Ever been to a famous NYC jam session, where the local heroes boot you off the stage mid-solo if you don't sustain a high enough standard of "hip"? Charlie Parker himself suffered quite a few indignities at the hands of Jazz Bullies. It's all testosterone induced. Around here, the schoolyard attitude is, "Me and my friends don't like you cause you disagree with me, so you're stupid and you suck. You need to prove yourself to us. We still won't like you or let you be in our clique, and we'll still insult you behind your back, we just want to make you jump through hoops for our own amusement. Don't you want our approval?" There's nothing wrong with comparing opinions about the creative or technical aspects of a musical performance. There's something fundamentally wrong with the attitude that dissent must be dealt with in an insulting and condescending manner. Simple as that, it's dysfunctional to lash out at anyone who disagrees with you. When a differing opinion is interpreted as threatening or disrespectful, communication stops and confrontation begins. When someone becomes confrontational, they've run out of useful information or ideas. |
