Try putting an EQ or boost in the effects loop. This puts the boost/eq after the preamp. Any pedal that boost the signal before the preamp (main input) is going to push the preamp to distort more. I have a Boss GE-7 in the effects loop of my 5150III and use it to jump out of the mix while soloing w/out increasing distorion.

I keep going back the Zinky Master Blaster, I've tried Catalinbread Serano Picaso and Keeley's... the Master Blaster just sounds better/right to my ears for solo's and rythms. I'm gunna order another for rythm and use one for solo, I do really want to try the Timmy though

+1 on the 'Dragon! The Lizard Leg Draconis is twice the fun (plus it adds a loop function). The 'Dragon knocked my Klon off my board. The Draconis knocked-off the RC Boost, while still allowing me to have a pre and post boost.

On-the-cheap.....the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster is surprisingly good clean boost, which adds the eq switch.

I also like the boost function of my Jester, not to mention it's superb OD.

When you kick on a boost if you don't get noticeable boost, just compression and more saturation, a treble boost is a good alternative. It will make your sound stand out more.

Building on what nevusofota said, it may be that you're having a bigger issue with pedal placement than with a particular boost pedal. If you put a boost at the beginning of your effect chain, it increases the distortion; if you place it at the end, you get the volume increase of a clean boost pedal for solos. Try your MXR Micro Amp as the last effect in the chain and see if that gets you closer to what you're looking for. If that generally works, then you can explore the more subtle differences among clean boost pedals. Also, having the Micro Amp last can restore the loss of signal after a series of effects -- having it always on somewhere between noon and 1:00 will make up for signal loss.

+1 on the Fat Boost 3, esp at 18volts. MEGA clean headroom and you can dial it in so the sound matches up and is not colored. I am super picky about that. I used to own an RC Booster and that is great if you want some nice grit in there but I thought it lacked headroom as a clean boost.

I've got a SHO I leave on all the time at the end of the chain. Sweetens everything.

Super duper 2 in 1, I leave on one side all the time to sweeten and use the other side as a solo boost

Another vote for the Lizard Leg Flying Dragon!!! If you're looking for a totally clean and transparent boost, your search is over

i have a keely time machine and a byoc triboost. i love them both since they are super veristile. they do sound different and dont suppose for a second that the keely blows away my homebuild. it dont. if you can find a triboost get it. from a leave alone clean boost to a perfect early sabbath tb, its got it.
the tmb has an extra footswitch for versatility
love em
