Bridge Humbucker - "I still haven't found what I'm looking for"...

Great to hear Husky chiming in. Thanks for the input even though I'm not the OP. I've enjoyed my SSV for some time and your humbuckers split very well I might add.

I'm just now discovering Motor City Pickups. Man, these look intriguing. The Afwayu has me VERY interested.

It seems everyone is hot on the Afwayu and the 2nd Degree Black Belts. I listened to James Lugo's massive pickup shootout MP3s - pretty helpful, but A LOT of those pickups sounded good.

For those of you who use them, which Motor City Pickup fits what I'm looking for? Where to start? (Check out the beginning of my thread)

I'll bump this up with some input. For your application I think an overwound Fralin Unbucker would work perfectly. Not only would it split really well for your clean sounds, but the full humbucker tones will be big and open due to the mismatched coils, but will still have some of the normal humbucker fatness.

I also wanted to add a big -1 to the Rio Grande BBQ bucker, its definitely dark and fat and anything but open sounding IMO.

Hey folks-

From what I can tell, here are my best options for bridge humbuckers, but i still haven't heard much on some of these models (from players, that is)

- Motor City Afwayu
- Motor City Angel Dust (Wade's suggestion)
- Tom Anderson H2+ or H3
- Suhr SSH+ or Suhr Aldrich
- James Tyler Super
- James Tyler California Special (does anyone know if it splits well?)

I listened to the James Lugo's big pickup shootout soundclips and every one of these sounded good. Hard to discern the subtleties...

After much deliberation, I'm going to give the Tyler Super (covered) a whirl.

My guitar seems to be very warm and resonant overall, but not overly bright. it has a lot in the mids and low mids. I talked with Lance at Wildwood Guitars (CO) and also Paul at Jim's shop and it sounds like the Super is a good complement to my alder/maple Strat. Paul also mentioned that the California Special would work if I wanted a darker tone - I'm betting that pickup would KILL in a swamp ash/maple set-up.

FWIW, next time you're looking at pickups, I just put a set of Motor City Pickups Hell Babys into one of my Carvin TL60s and I dig em. Very round sounding, good output for rock, and they split well. The neck pickup especially is pretty bitchin.

I have the pickup your describing exactly!!!!
Getting one may not be so easy, I think they are still in production but I can not say how a new production one will sound.
The pickup I have that fits your specifications is a Dimarzio Super Distortion with a gold cover, manufactured sometime in the 70's.
If you can get one it will definitely give you what you are looking for according to what you described.

At one point I was like you, I spent years searching, trying pick-up after pick-up. Then one day I found a Hum combination that I love and will never switch away from (and they tap great, all my humbuckers on all my guitars are set-up for tapping.

Neck- DiMarzio Air Norton
Bridge- DiMarzio Steve Special

Now more recently I have discovered Rockfield pickups and from what i have heard in person they sound great, but personally I am not ready to switch up my winning combo.

Also another thing I have done to all my guitars (except my Strat) have a brass nut put on. I swear by the Steve Special I love that pick-up.
My:
Ernie Ball Music Man, has a Fernandez Sustainer on the neck and a Steve Special on the Bridge (set up to tap) (Brass Nut)

Les Paul has Air Norton (neck), Steve Special (bridge), both set to tap (brass nut)

Dean Soltero same set-up as the Les Paul

anywho......I have found I can cover a wide range of tone, power and balls with that set-up. But once again that is what works for me.
