Fulltone Bassdrive is also an excellent chioce (currently in the pile of misfit pedals, but it will be back)

Man I am not a fan of overdrive on bass, I prefer an all out distortion or fuzz. But a thread on Talkbass got me looking, and I think the Catalinbread SFT may be the best bass OD I have ever seen come up.
It is a bass specific OD that has the same pick sensitivity as many of the sought after high end pedals guitarist like.

http://www.xotic.us/video/ric_fierabracci/index.html check out the videos here on the Xotic Effects Bass BB preamp and X-Blender used together. THIS is the ultimate in overdrive and distortion it REAL TRUE BYPASS and the X-blender allows you to mix it in with your dry signal perfectly. Truly kicks the tar out of other bass overdrives.

I've got the SFT and love it. I'm thinking of getting another one because it's got more than one great sounding setting.

Holy thread ressurection Batman! Thanks for all the suggestions. I've really decided to get the MXR M80, mainly because I've had experience with them, and like the DI and different channel functions. I'm probably gonna get something else too, I really like the sound of that SFT, just don't care too much for the price. Keep'em coming if you got'em!

Siegmund DoubleDrive. I've used it on bass for years.
Incredibly versatile tool. http://siegmundguitars.com/pedal.html

Everyone nuts over my fulltone bassdrive. Use an 18v power source and it has even more bass.

Nobody mentions the Zvex Woolly Mammoth?
Dang, I love mine! I've certainly never experienced any loss of bass frequencies. Just loss of face-skin due to melting. |

It is a great pedal, but doesn't play well with most active basses.

Yeah I know its more of a distortion, I think I may have misrepresented exactly what I was looking for, but I actually am looking for overdrive and distortion. I ordered the M80 this morning, so I think I've got distortion covered. I'm still really thinking about the SFT, and the Bass BB preamp for overdrive, but I would really like something a little more economical.

I really dig my SFT, but only with the Pbass. I can't seem to get the same tone and feel out of it with the J, but I haven't really tried too hard. It's a very versatile pedal and it's got a ton of sounds.

Very true. I'm so glad to hear this from someone else. I thought that maybe it was just my unit.

I've got a Tronographic Rusty Box. Based on the preamp of the Traynor TS-50B bass amp. Keeps the low end. Sounds good.

But if you are not stuck on that tone, there are other lower cost alternatives to the ones mentioned here. I do not recommend the Boss ODB-3, especially when the EHX Bass Big Muff is such a wisely priced and fairly versatile pedal. If I were you, I would try that out and see whether you like that tone. The Catalinbread SFT is a well-thought out pedal (as, I think, all their pedals have been) that's getting good reviews. Check the videos. $160 is totally reasonable for what you get, I think.
