You don't drink, you don't have this disease.

A lot of alcoholics have died under the treatment of such "medical professionals".

Well, you know what they say about opinions don't you ?

While the original question had validity, the whole follow on discussion, if you want to call it that, would be be pretty humorous if the level of ignorance wasn't so tragic. For a true clinical alcoholic, ( a far different beast than a stupid drunk ), the disease is even more devastating because of the level of ignorance and therefore stigma attached by so many prevents early recognition and referral to the very effective treatment options currently available.

FYI: CAGE screen

C - Has anyone ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking?
A - Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
G - Have you ever felt Guilty about your drinking?
E - Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?
A single positive response to the CAGE questions is considered suggestive of an alcohol problem, and 2 or more positive responses indicate the presence of such a problem with a sensitivity and specificity approximately 90% in most studies. One report indicated that the CAGE questions are best applied if not preceded by questions attempting to quantify alcohol intake.

This is one of the MOST common misconceptions about the DISEASE of alcoholism/addiction.....that if you just stop drinking/drugging....all will be well.

Couldn't be further from the truth....ask the families of someone who has committed suicide from untreated alcoholism....or ask any "non-medical professional" or volunteer at a half-way house, detox center, or treatment center how many funerals they've been to of people who believed exactly like you......"if I just stop drinking/drugging, all will be well"
